I’ve used ChatGPT a few times to write user stories and so far I have been very impressed at the depth of which it goes, especially the more detail you provide around how you want it written. It is a topic frequently discussed at senior levels as to where it can benefit product teams.
So – should I be concerned?!
I’d certainly use it as part of the kit bag of tools at hand to create enough detail and support especially the edge cases. Writing user stories can be tedious at times, especially during refinement when the inevitable “what about x y z” edge case is brought up. I can see it freeing up time on the “repetitive” details that stories need to have (NFRs, Acceptance criteria edge cases etc.)
Things it WON’T do.
1) Look at a customer in the eye, creating relationships & build up trust.
2) Watch what people are doing and how they do it, to understand the tacit details that inevitably exist in any processes.
3) Make decisions on gut instincts
4) Create a great culture in the team, understanding each member, learn about them and their personalities and making sure they feel inclusive to maximise their potential.
5) Share a joke/embarrassing story/picture of childhood as a retro icebreaker.
6) Laugh, cry, celebrate, commiserate at every success and failure.
So. I’m not worried! Life will be different….but it’s a chance to embrace and get the value sooner rather than later!
