Be Prepared

It wasn’t a holiday – but it was a break from IT.

Last week saw a family camp I had co-organised take place Wales, where we had ~150 people on site for 6 days and water activities were a primary and popular aspect of it.

The months of preparation and sleepless nights paid off and a great time was had by all.

In launching one of the boats I noticed the engine wasn’t idling well, and on testing would not respond to power demand. Fortunately a marine mechanic was able to resolve quickly.

One of the most important things I learnt on my RYA powerboat course many years ago is to make sure your engine is running before you cast off. On many occasions i’ve seen boats adrift with the occupants frantically trying to paddle back to shore.

Any kind of sailing comes with risks. More so when you’re moving at speed. The time taken to prepare the boat and ensure all kit is present and functioning, passengers are wearing life jackets and are prepared for when you take off is never wasted.

The time spent to prepare for Digital Transformation, Integration or any new business system is rarely wasted.

Be prepared is a well used motto, but if/when things go wrong will always pay dividends.
